Former Cops discharged from Ishrat Jahan Case

Npnews24 online: Former police officer D G Vanzara and N K Amin discharged from the Ishrat Jahan alleged fake encounter case by special CBI court. Court allowed discharge of Vanzara and Amin application, which they had filed after the Gujarat government refused to grant sanction to the CBI to prosecute them.

Section 197 of Code of criminal procedure, the government’s sanctionis necessary for the prosecution of public servant for an act done as part of official duty.

Ishrat, a 19-year-old from Mumbra near Mumbai, Javed Shaikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjadali Akbarali Rana and Zeeeshan Johar were killed by the Gujarat Police in an encounter on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004.

The police claimed they were terrorist and planning to kill then Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by Gujarat High Court had later concluded fake encounter and case transferred to CBI. In 2013, seven Gujarat police officers, including IPS officers P P Pandey, Vanzara and G L Singhal, were named accused.
