Extra-curricular should be as important as main curriculum – Prakash Javdekar

Pune: NP NEWS 24 ONLINE- “Activities that are termed as the extra-curricular should have equal importance as classroom learning”, said Prakash Javdekar, Union HRD Minister after inaugurating Malpani Foundation’s Dhruv Global School at Nande Village. Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kakade, Govinddev Giri Maharaj, Dr. Sanjay Malpani, Founder of Dhruv Global School and Actor Rahul Solapurkar were present on the occasion along with Manish, Girish, Ashish & Rajesh Malpani and Sangeeta Raut, Principal, Dhruv Global School.

Speaking on the occasion Javdekar said, “We need to have equal focus on experiential learning, sports, physical education and life skills education for the wholistic development of the child. We are trying to reduce the burden of classroom syllabus in a phased manner to facilitate this thought. This year we are reducing the syllabus by 10% and by 20% in the following year so that kids can get required time for experiential learning, sports and life skills.

“Under Samagra Shiksha drive more than 11 Lac schools are being given a special grant ranging between Rs.5000/- to Rs.25000/- for procuring books for library and buying sports equipment separately. Close to 3000 Atal Tinkering Labs have been set up in schools across the country for introducing children to the modern science in an appropriate way”, he added.

Javdekar opined that public and private sectors both have an equally important role to play when it comes to education. He sought an example of a Cleanliness competition that was held last year, which was initially restricted to only state-run schools and thus saw participation of only 2.5 Lac schools. However, this year when the competition was opened to private schools, the figure of participating schools reached 6.5 Lac. This is the benefit of taking both the sectors together.

In India about 26 Crore children are taking school education of which 13 Cr are taking it from the state or central government school. This shows us that the number of children in non-governmental schools is equally big.

He said that it is often considered that teacher’s responsibility is primarily classroom teaching. Whereas, his responsibility is first towards identifying the talent of his student. He also mentioned about IIT Pal initiative of HRD Ministry. PAL – Professor Assisted Learning lectures prepared by IITs help students prepare for JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) and are telecast on HRD Ministry’s Swayam Prabha Channels, which can be accessed on mobile anytime. IIT PAL has more than 600 lectures on subjects like physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics.

This is the second school of Malpani Foundation. The first one is operational at Sangamner since past 14 years. This new Dhruv Global School set up at Nande is spread across 2.2 Lac square feet and is loaded with best in class infrastructure with international standard sports facilities. The School will admit students from Playgroup to 8th Standard from the academic year.

Addressing the gathering Dr. Sanjay said, Dhruv is a CSR activity to the Malpani Group. It is opened with a view point to nurture our future generations. He said Education is not an industry for us, but it is worship for us. The school proves to be the blend of modernity, individuality and culture.
