The Er. Group or the ‘Engineers’ known as the genius group celebrate a day only dedicated to them on 15 September every year. This day is the day of gratitude and respect for them and, the man from whom this all starts was paid tribute to by the nation!

The man of Engineering or known as the father of Engineering, M. Visvesvaraya is the greatest Indian Engineer. His full name was Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. The theme of the year 2018 Engineers Day is “Role of Engineers in a developing India”.

Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, born on 15 September 1861, near Chikkaballapur in South Karnataka went on to become India’s most creative civil engineer, dam builder, economist, statesman and can be counted among the last century’s foremost nation-builders.

Prime Minister pays tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to Bharat Ratna M Visvesvaraya with a tweet.

He tweeted, “On Engineers Day, I congratulate our hardworking engineers and appreciate their dexterity as well as dedication. Their role in nation building is extremely vital.

“I also pay tribute to the noted engineer, M Visvesvaraya, on his birth anniversary,” Modi said in a tweet attaching the video of his recent monthly radio broadcast “Mann Ki Baat”.

Tech giant Google also celebrated the 158th birth anniversary of Visvesvaraya with a special Doodle. “Living by the phrase ‘Work is Worship,’ Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya-fondly known as Sir MV-devoted his life to engineering. A master of irrigation design, the world-renowned civil engineer became such a great man in his field that India celebrates Engineers Day each year on his birthday,” read the blog post.

The Doodle features a color sketch of Sir MV and the background shows the iconic Krishna Raja Sagar dam built across the Cauvery river in Mandya, Karnataka.

  1. Some people say Sir MV would walk for over 60km to attend United Mission School, in Bengaluru and would also sit under the street lamps to study at night.
  2. Besides being a world-renowned civil engineer, M Visvesvaraya was the 19th Diwan of Mysore, who served between 1912 and 1918. He was appointed as the Chief Engineer of Mysore State in 1909.
  3. Visvesvaraya won people’s attention when he designed a flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad. He was instrumental in developing a system to protect Visakhapatnam port from sea erosion.
  4. M Visvesvaraya received the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest honor, in 1955. He was called the “Father of Modern Mysore State”.
  5. He was awarded several honorary doctoral degrees including eight universities in India.
