After making the statement, Dalai Lama was trolled and questioned on social media after which he apologised publicly. He said, “My statement has created controversy, I apologise if I said something wrong.”

The 83-year-old monk was addressing an event at the Goa Institute of Management in Goa’s Sankhalim town, located about 40 km from Panaji.

Dalai Lama was present as the key speaker of the celebration hosted by the Goa Institute of Management where he had said that India and Pakistan would have remained one if Pandit Nehru had accepted Mahatma Gandhi’s choice of appointing Muhammed Ali Jinnah as the country’s first prime minister.

83 year old spiritual leader said, “When I heard that Gandhiji was against partition, I felt pity. There are more Muslims in India than in Pakistan. But past is past”

Dalai Lama had made this statement in reference to the answer of a question asked by one of the students of Goa Institute of Management about one’s decisions, their ramifications and how one can avoid making mistakes in life.

In reply to this, he had said, “”I think it was Pandit Nehru’s self-centred attitude to see himself as the Prime Minister. If Mahatma Gandhi’s idea was accepted, India and Pakistan would have been one. I know Pandit Nehru very well, he was a very experienced and discreet person, but sometimes mistakes are made.”

Dalai Lama had also said, “”I believe that the democratic system is very good rather than the feudal system. Some people have the power to make a decision in the feudal system, which is very dangerous. I think Mahatma Gandhi was very much interested in giving Jinnah the prime minister’s post. But Pandit Nehru did not accept it.”
