‘Conference’ of Master Chief Petty Officers

The Western Naval Command of the Indian Navy conducted a ‘Conference’ of Master Chief Petty Officers(MCPOs), the senior-most sailors (personnel other than officer ranks) of the Navy, at Mumbai from 16-17 Aug 18.

The first such conference was held by the Western Naval Command in 2016. Heartened by the response generated by past conferences, this year witnessed the third edition of the conference which aims at carrying forward the initiative and consolidating the gains accrued thereon. The participants were drawn from across the entire Western Naval Command; Goa; Karwar and Porbandar, besides personnel from Mumbai.

Conceptualised in a manner such that the senior most sailors of the Navy not only get involved in planning and conducting it, the Conference also actively utilizes their vast experience and puts forward their views encompassing all realms of the Navy; operations, technical/ maintenance as well as personnel/ administration.

Inaugurating the conference, Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, FOC-IN-C West, highlighted that inputs from the Master Chief Petty Officers are vital in the decision making the process of the Navy. He stated that such Conferences are ideal platforms to tap into the rich and varied experience of the MCPOs and that the Navy benefits tremendously from such inputs.

He urged the MCPOs to discuss issues in a candid manner, and convey the essence of the deliberations to other MCPOs, Senior Sailors and Junior Sailors of the Navy. He highlighted that MCPOs provide a key link between the officers and junior sailors. He stated that there is a need to build upon the successful conduct of this Conference, initiated by the WNC, towards empowerment and participative decision making.
