The CBI had submitted that Kalaskar’s accomplice Sachin Andure has been arrested in the killing of Dabholkar and is currently in CBI custody. Of the two shooters, Kalaskar is the second shooter, hence his custody is required.

However, as Kalaskar had been already remanded to ATS custody till September 3, the court refused to grant his custody to CBI. After ATS custody is over, then CBI will apply for his custody again.

Dr. Narendra Dabholkar (67), rationalist and founder of Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti (MANS), was shot dead on 20 August 2013, by two unidentified gunmen on a bridge near Omkareshwar temple. Andhure is accused of being one of the shooters, while Sharad Kalaskar is the other accused.

On August 19, Andhure was arrested by the Maharashtra ATS which handed him over to CBI. He was later produced in a Pune court and remanded to custody till August 30.
