Arnab Case : Tweeting on SC’s decision cost dear to Kunal Kamra, Contempt of court case on Comedian

New Delhi : Contempt of court on stand-up comedian Kunal Kamara has been filed. Kamara had criticized the Supreme court after the interim bail granted to Arnab Goswami, editor of Republic TV. Lawyer Rizwan Siddiqui had written a letter to the Attorney General claiming that the tweet had insulted the court and the judge. After that, Attorney General KK Venugopal has now given permission to prosecute Kamra for contempt of court.

Venugopal said Kamra’s tweet was an insult to the Supreme Court. Today, people are openly criticizing the Supreme Court. This makes them feel part of freedom of expression. There is a boundary between humor and insult. The boundary is crossed by Kamra. People should know that criticizing the Supreme Court leads to punishment.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the release of Arnab Goswami and two other accused on interim bail. Arnab Goswami was released from jail last night following a Supreme Court order. Decision of his release got mixed reactions on social media. Kunal Kamra had also tweeted about this. In it, he wrote, “Harish Salve will soon replace Mahatma Gandhi’s photo, given the speed with which the Supreme Court is sorting out important issues in the country.”

In another tweet, Kunal Kamara wrote that DY Chandrachud is a flight attendant who offers champagne to first class passengers after they’re fast tracked while commoners don’t know that he will be boarded or seated, let alone served.
