Accused marries minor ‘rape’ victim, court awards him seven years rigorous imprisonment

The district court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 16-year-old girl, who is now his wife.

Special judge K. D.Wadne also imposed a fine of Rs 500 on the convict Bunty Suryakant Patil, a resident of Vishrantwadi.

According to police, the incident had come to light on January 27,2017, when the girl delivered a stillbirth in urinal. Her mother had gone to check on her she didnt came out of the washroom even after long duration. Later she was taken to Sassoon hospital where doctors had declared child as dead.

Though a rape case was registered against Patil, he was released on bail later. He married the victim and they live together now. They had been coming to court together for hearings.

The court held that at the time of incident she was a minor girl, and the marriage cannot lessen the guilt of accused.
