6 Dead, Over 55 Lakh Affected in Assam-Bihar Floods, Red Alert in Idukki, Kerala

New Delhi : At least six people died on Wednesday due to floods in Assam and Bihar. More than 55 lakh people have been affected by the floods. In some parts of Kerala, continuous rains led to water logging in the low-lying areas and partly affected rail and road traffic services. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Idukki district in Kerala and heavy rainfall has been forecast there. Though rain in the national capital Delhi brought relief to the people due to the humid weather, there was water logging in the low lying areas which disrupted traffic and electricity and water supply.

Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the meteorological department’s regional center, said, “From Tuesday evening to Thursday, the monsoon trough will remain close to Delhi-NCR. During this period, the easterly winds from the Arabian Sea and the east wind from the Bay of Bengal will reach Haryana, Delhi-NCR, western Uttar Pradesh and northern Rajasthan. He informed that due to its effect, heavy to very heavy rainfall will occur in these areas.

A bulletin issued in Assam on Wednesday said that three people died due to drowning in the flood waters in the state, despite the improvement in the flood situation in the state, about 17 lakh people in 21 districts of the state are still affected. It said that till Tuesday, 19.81 lakh people in 21 districts have been affected due to floods.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has said that in daily flood report that one person has died due to drowning in the districts of Barpeta, Kokrajhar and Kamrup. With this, the number of people who died due to floods and landslides has increased to 133 this year. Of these 107 died due to flooding while 26 died due to landslides.

The authority has said in its report that more than 16.55 lakh people have been affected due to floods. The most affected district due to floods is Golapada where more than 4 lakh 19 thousand people have been affected. At present, there is a problem of floods in 1536 villages and crops in more than 92 thousand 899 hectares of land have been destroyed in the entire state.

Bihar Pradesh Disaster Department has said that the number of deaths has increased to 11 with three more deaths due to floods in the state. About 40 lakhs have been affected due to floods. All three deaths occurred in Darbhanga district. The Disaster department has said that due to heavy rains, the number of people affected due to floods in the state has increased to 38.47 lakh.
