500 fishermen detained in jails of Pakistan and Sri Lanka

NP NEWS 24 ONLINE- Central government on Wednesday said that in various jails of Pakistan and Sri Lanka total 500 Indian fishermen are detained.

In a written response to a question by Lok Sabha, foreign state minister V.K Singh said that there are 482 fishermen in jails of Pakistan whereas 18 fishermen are detained in jails of Sri Lanka.

According to V.K. Singh, Pakistan has total 1,050 Indian fishing boats and Sri Lanka has 10.

He said that Pakistan has accepted that 391 fishermen are under their custody but haven’t taken any charge of the fishing boats.

This year, total 388 Indian fishermen were released from both countries, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Pakistan released 174 whereas Srilanka released 214 fishermen.

Singh said, “Government gives much priority to the safety and well-being of Indian fishermen”.
