Woman delivers baby after getting womb transplant in Pune hospital

PUNE: NP NEWS 24 ONLINE – First time in Asia, a woman from Gujrat delivers a baby in Pune hospital through a transplanted uterus.

While technology in the world is reaching it’s heights every day a hospital from Pune has added another success for the country. Galaxy Care hospital from Pune has successfully transplanted a uterus into a woman’s body and after months of pregnancy, the lady has now given a birth to a baby girl here in Pune.

This is for the first time in Asia and almost twelth (12th) time in the world when a woman has given birth to a baby by transplanting the uterus into her body.

The another magical, as well as an emotional part of this story, was that the uterus was donated by a mother of a woman which means a baby that is delivered now is delivered from the same uterus from which a woman is born.

In past, the lady had approached many hospitals for treatment since she was unable to deliver a baby but every time she was informed that nothing can be done in her case.

The baby’s mother, Meenakshi Walan from Vadodara had got a uterus transplant from her mother.

Mother had donated her uterus to her because her daughter’s uterus was damaged and couldn’t conceive a baby.

17 months after getting her mother’s womb, Meenakshi has delivered a baby girl at the Galaxy Care Hospital in Pune on Friday around 12.15 am.

Meenakshi, 27, was kept under observation for a few months after her transplant which was held in Pune on May 19, 2017. She is beautician by professional.
She was sent back home to Gujarat once her health showed improvement and responding well the medicines.

When she experienced her first menstrual cycle, she has come back to Pune.

In March this year, the embryo was transferred to her new uterus that is on April 7, 2018. And after 31 weeks and 5 days (over 7 months), Meenakshi prematurely underwent a cesarean section.

While sharing the details, the surgeon behind the miracle, an overwhelmed Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, said that history has been created.

This is, in fact, a very proud moment for India, as figures show that this is the twelfth baby in the world to be born through a uterus transplant. Nine such babies were born in Sweden, two in the United States, and now this is the first one in all of Asia.

The surgeon reiterated that India made it happen. Today the whole world’s medical fraternity is keeping an eye on this case and Dr. Puntambekar, who made India and Asia proud of it.

Dr. Puntambekar is a cancer surgeon, specialized in laparoscopic cancer surgery. He is considered as an expert in laparoscopic pelvic surgery and gynecological cancer surgery in the world, and has developed laparoscopic radical hysterectomy for cancer cervix known world over as the ‘Pune technique’.
