Veteran Journalist Kuldip Nayar passes away

95-year old eminent Indian writer and journalist Kuldip Nayar breathes his last at a Delhi based hospital followed by prolong illness caused. Nayar was observed by his wife and sons during his last few days of life.

He passed away around 1 pm on Thursday. He was admitted in hospital as he was suffering from a disease called Pneumonia. His last rites were performed in Lodhi.

About Kuldip Nayar:

Kuldip Nayar was born on 14 August 1923 and died in 23 August 2018. He was a veteran journalist, human right activist, an author and ex-high commissioner of India to United Kingdom. He was also nominated as a member of the upper house of the Indian Parliament in 1997. He was Punjabi, but was originally born in Sialkot in 1923.

In his long career, he started as an Urdu press reporter. He served as a press information officers to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri as well as veteran congress leader and former Union Home Minister Govind Ballabh Pant.

He was deeply interested in peaceful relations between India and Pakistan. He had written about his interview with Pakistan’s nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, during which the latter revealed that Pakistan had a nuclear device well before it was thought to have had it.

As a journalist, he worked with a range of news agencies and media organizations in India and was also the corresponding of the times London, for more than two decades.

He wrote over a dozen books, and is best known for his work:

Through his writings, he clearly presented the picture of partition, bloodshed, brutality, efforts of our leaders, sacrifices of freedom fighters and a lot more.

In a way, he emerged as a courageous author who talked freely about the situation of the nation without any fear. He authored around 15 books written in both Hindi and English.

Nayar was a man who had always been appreciated for his work by many prominent leaders, editors and other famous personalities.

Courageous and fearless Nayar has also been awarded with many accolades and prestigious awards for his contribution towards nation. He was awarded with, 2003 Astor Award for press freedom, 2007 Shaheed Niyogi Memorial Award for lifetime Achievement.

In 1999, he was awarded an Alumni Merit Award by North western University. Kuldip Nayar was also honored with the Ramnath Goenka Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 for his contribution to journalism.

Ever since the news of his death broke out, citizens of India have been expressing their grief and have been giving tributes to the brave author.
