Special Cell to check price of foods in Multiplex

Food and Civil supplies Minister Girish Bapat has declared a special cell that will check the price of the water bottles and cold drinks sold in multiplexes and Malls. In the last two days, this cell has raided more than 7 multiplexes and malls including, City Pride, Kothrud and Amonora, Hadapsar.

Other malls that are, “ Westend Mall, Aundh, City Pride, Kothrud, Season Mall, Hadapsar, In Orbit Mall, Nagar Road,  KFC and Burger King in the City, have been raided by the special cell and the prices were checked.” Said the Minister.

He further added,“ This special cell will not just check the price of the food and product but also the weight of the packaged food, name of the producer and address, date of production, expiry date. In Pune District Assistant Moderator of Valid Measurement Science, Nitin Udmale will be heading the cell with Valid Measurement Science Inspector Rajendra Aakhare, Giridh Waghmare, Pravin Joshi, Pramod Kudalkar, Sanghmeshwar Raghoji, Somnath Mahajan.”

The cell has been instructed to take immediate action on the Multiplexes selling food products above the Maximum Retail Prize (MRP). A product of same price and of same weight are sold at different prices. To control the price of the product, state government had forwarded a proposal to the Central government and green signal has been given by the government to the proposal. Thus, the Food and Supplies Department has taken a strict action against the rule benders.

Earlier, Bombay High Court had given the direction after Jainendra Baxi filed a PIL against the situation where multiplexes chain of charging 300% to 500% of higher prices from the market’s price were on hike. The PIL claimed carrying food and drinking items from outside is not allowed inside the theatres and multiplexes.
