This Smart Bicycle plan has been implemented by the PMC since 2017 December. Despite strict security systems associated with these bicycles, the thieves made a full proof plan and succeeded in stealing the bicycles.

Despite having a QR code scanner, a specialized developed app linked with PayTM and sensors which could detect theft, the smart thieves carried out this theft successfully. The thieves took off the sensor and broke the lock of the bicycles.

These thieves are none other than small children from Bhosai Vasti area near Karve Nagar.

Sandip Khardekar, Vice President, BJP Pune, found more than 7 cycles from slum areas near Karve Nagar. After digging more into the case, he wrote a letter to Pune’s Police Commissioner Dr. K Venkatesham regarding this case.

In his letter he asked the CP K Venkatesham to look into the matter. He wrote, “I don’t want to spoil the life of these kids hence I don’t want to file a complaint. But, if these incidents of theft keep continuing then we must take an action.”

When our reporter asked Sandip Khardekar about how he came to know about the bicycle thieves, he said, “One day I was just having a walk near Karve Road, I saw one boy and one girl using the smart city bicycle. When I looked closely I saw that there is no lock on it. So, I went to the kids and asked them about the cycle. In return the girl questioned me back about who I was. The kids immediately ran away leaving the cycle there.I went to the nearby area and found more than 7 cycles there.”

In response to the letter, crime DCP Pankaj Dahane has send letter to the police station to look into the matter of Smart Bicycle.
This issue has raised a question that despite the Pune City is on the verge to become smart, are the Punekars really ready for the change?
