Retail merchants organization CAIT demands ban on Amazon

New Delhi : Merchants’ organization CAIT has urged the government to ban Amazon’s e-commerce portal and its operations in India. The organization accused the global e-commerce company of indulging in a market-ruining price system through heavy discounts and control over stockpiles. CAIT general secretary Pravin Khandelwal urged an immediate ban on Amazon’s portal and its functioning in India.

He also requested for a time-bound investigation against the company. He also urged the government to investigate the business activities of Amazon and Flipkart. However, both Amazon and Flipkart said that they are working according to Indian law. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) also wrote a letter to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in this context.

CAIT wrote in a letter to Goyal that “Our organization is investigating multinationals like Amazon and Flipkart (Walmart) for taking advantage and violating FDI policy and foreign exchange management act / rules from your office and has been requesting you to punish.’ The organization said that nothing was done seriously by the government during the national convention held in Nagpur from 8 to 10 February.

Over 150 business leaders attending the conference took a pledge that if the government does not take immediate steps in this matter, a nationwide agitation will be held. When asked about this, an Amazon India spokesperson said that the company is operating according to Indian law. He said, “Over the years, many changes have been made in the rules regarding e-commerce and Amazon has taken immediate steps to comply with them every time.” A Flipkart spokesperson said that it is fully in compliance with the law of the country and is fully committed to fair trade activities.
