Pune: Tourists flock holiday destinations Mahabaleshwar, Lonavala, Matheran

Pune: As soon as the state government has given a green signal for temples and tourist places to open up, residents of Mumbai and Pune are travelling to hill stations and other places in huge numbers. Places like Matheran, Mahabaleshwar, Karla caves, Lonavala and resorts in Konkan are witnessing a double fold increase in the footfall of visitors.
Matheran is one such place that has recently attracted a lot of people, especially after the toy train facility has resumed. President of Matheran hill station municipal corporation, Prerna Sawant has appealed to the residents of the town as well as the tourists that uttermost precautions should be taken for safety of all.
The central government had imposed a nationwide lockdown from March 25 in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic. The state borders were allowed to be accessed for only essential and exempted services. The Maharashtra state government had also closed down inter-district movement. This lockdown was relaxed in phases across the country.
Goa and Karnataka state opened up their borders two months back and since then tourism activities picked up in these areas.
The Maharashtra state government also recently allowed tourist places to open up after which tourists have thronged resorts in Konkan, Mahabaleshwar, Matheran and Karla areas.
