Pune police collects Rs 25 lakhs fine daily from helmet less drivers

Pune – The deadline given by Pune city police to purchase has ended and now helmet rule will be strictly enforced.

To give Punekars a feel of this enforcement, the traffic branch of Pune city police collected Rs 25 lakh fine from about 5,000 persons every day in the last week of December 2018. The fine for not wearing helmet is Rs 500 but repeat offenders may loose their vehicle and passport verification also, police have warned.

Every year about 200 deaths occur in the city as people were not wearing helmets. Hence, the cops have began implementing the rule strictly.

Pune Police Commissioner Dr K Venkatesham clarified in November last year that helmet rule will be implemented strictly.

Pune commissioner has taken a bold decision to stop in number of deaths in road accident in Pune City. This decision is regarding the use of Helmet. This decision will be implemented from 1st January 2019.

It is important to take in to consideration that earlier same kind of decision was taken. But when people protested against the decision the implementation of the same was stopped. Now this decision has been made by the new Commissioner of Police.

Earlier in 2016 the government tried to implement the same rule. Transport Minister Diwakar Raote said in 2016 that ‘No Helmet, No Petrol’ rule in Maharashtra, had said on that the rule would be implemented across the state, but put the onus on implementing it on the traffic department. In the same breath, he clarified that the rule would not be forced upon two-wheeler riders, but would be implemented by counselling and creating awareness—which actually is what has been happening in Pune for years.

He then said, “First, the Supreme Court clearly ruled that helmets should be mandatory for two-wheeler riders. And now, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has said that the state government is within its purview to implement the ‘No Helmet, No Petrol’ norm,”
