Pune PMC News | Pune Municipal Efforts Result in Enhanced Capacity of Katraj Lake

Pune : Pune PMC News | The municipal administration has taken proactive measures to address the issue of silt accumulation in Katraj Lake located in Rajiv Gandhi Zoo. With the concerted efforts of the Sewage and Sewerage Department, 10,000 cubic meters of sludge has been successfully removed from the lake, resulting in an increased storage capacity of one crore litres.

The rapid urbanization in the vicinity of Katraj Lake has led to direct sewage inflow, contributing to the build-up of silt. In response to this challenge, Additional Commissioner Dr. Kunal Khemnar directed the Sewage and Sewerage Department to take immediate action. Consequently, the department has implemented various concrete measures, yielding positive results and an enhanced storage capacity for the lake.

As part of the initiative, two additional siphons have been commissioned, supplementing the existing infrastructure. A comprehensive survey of the drains surrounding Katraj Lake was conducted using drones to gather accurate data. Based on the findings, a new sewage channel has been developed, leading to the construction of a two-million-liter capacity sewage treatment plant. This new facility will effectively process the sewage flowing into the lake through the drain.

To further improve the lake’s water management during the monsoon season, the electricity department has initiated the procurement process for a mud pump. Once installed in Katraj Lake, the pump will enable better control over water levels, mitigating potential flooding issues.

The efforts undertaken by the vehicle department, utilizing JCBs and dumpers, have resulted in the successful removal of 10,000 cubic meters of silt from the lake. This significant achievement has not only improved the overall condition of Katraj Lake but also bolstered its water storage capacity by one crore litres.

The officials from the wastewater and sewage disposal department have highlighted the positive impact of these initiatives. The rejuvenation of Katraj Lake stands as a testament to the municipal administration’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable water management.
