Pune Municipal Corporation gets UN Prestigious Award

Pune has always been in the good books for its cleanliness. After being awarded country’s no. 1 city in terms of livability index few days back, Pune now has raised its name at international level.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)  got this award from United Nations Environment in USA. Pune Municipal Corporation PMC has been awarded with prestigious award by United Nations Environment programme, USA, The Climate & Clean Air Coalition summit Secretariat, ” Climate & Clean Air Award 2018″.

The names of award winners  were announced at award ceremony during the Global Action Climate Summit  at Modern Museum of Art, San Francisco, United States of America on September 11, 2018. This award ceremony was a part of Super Pollutant Day. Super pollutants includes black carbon, methane, tropospheric ozone and hydrofluorocarbons.

Prestigous UN award for cleanliness and climate

Mayor of Pune, Mukta Tilak, Shrinath Bhimale leader of house,  Yogesh Mulik the chairman of standing committee, and Suresh Jagtap Joint commissioner of  PMC were present to receive this prestigious award. This event gave opportunity to winners to showcase their work to audiences and media representatives present on this occasion.

Pune city is one of the few cities in India which manages treatment on the wastes generated. Pune always comes with various innovative strategies to work on solid waste treatment by involving a group of marginalized women in cleaning campaign of city.

The harmful pollutants which are generated through solid waste affects climate and people. These pollutants release very harmful gases after getting burnt polluting soil and water, if it gets unsustainable management.

More than 3000 women work on this projects, which is known as Solid Waste Collection and Handling (SWaCH). These workers provides door to door service of waste collection services in more than 600,000 homes in Pune. It recycles more than 50,000 tonnes wastes per year.

Pune Municipal Corporation is recognized of its innovative waste management solutions that reduce short lived climate pollutant emissions and generate economic opportunity. PMC got this award in Policy change category.

The PMC policy and planning is an example of generating employment and economic opportunities  for formal sector workers though Solid waste management. This type of projects are highly applicable and useful to other cities too.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Hal Harvey, Minister Catherine Mckenna Dr Mario Molina, Distinguished professor Veerabhadran Ramanathan and Minister Xie Zhenhua got awards in individual category, who have greatly contributed to save environment. Whereas, China Diesel Emission Standards’ Pune waste management program and Santiago City’s Euro Vi Bus Standers got awards in policy change category.

There were total 80 nominees from 27 countries and 16 were finalist this year (It also includes individual efforts). The Climate and Clean Air Awards 2018 finalist presents a wide range of projects to reduce harmful air and pollutants of climate.

The finalists were selected to recognize the extraordinary efforts taken by them and contribution to reduce the short lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) by implementation of programmes, projects and policies.
