Pune Crime News | Illegal Dumping in Pavana Riverbed; Three Caught Red-Handed by Sangvi Police

Pune: Pune Crime News | In a move to crackdown environmental offenders, the Sangvi Police have lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against three individuals for carrying out illegal dumping in the Pavana riverbed. The accused, identified as Navnath Ambadas Manjulkar (55), Shivappa Lakappa Pujari (32), and Hanumant Patalappa Pawar (32), all residents of Sangvi, were promptly arrested and booked under various sections of the law.

The accused, who were drivers by profession, were charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) 277 for fouling water of a public spring or reservoir, section 15 of the Environment Protection Act, 1986, and section 376 A of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888. Their actions of indiscriminate dumping had the potential to severely contaminate the river, posing a serious threat to the environment and public health.

The arrest was made after a vigilant team of environment inspectors from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), led by Amol Ganpat Gorkhe, the sanitary inspector of the environment engineering department, spotted the accused engaged in their illegal activities near Maharaja Hotel at approximately 2:30 pm.

The environment patrol team observed the trio using two tempos (with registration numbers MH 17 AG 2350 and MH 11 CH 1948) and a tractor (bearing number KA 36 TD 6482) to dump debris and waste into the riverbed. Recognizing the immediate threat to the river’s ecological balance, the inspectors acted promptly and caught the culprits red-handed.

“The accused were found engaged in illegal dumping of debris and waste in the riverbed, which amounted to pollution of the river,” stated Gorkhe.

Following their arrest, the accused were produced before the court, where they faced penalties for their actions. The police also seized the two tempos and the tractor that were involved in the illegal dumping.
