Pune: Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar on Thursday interacted with residents of Aundh in the backdrop of a senior citizen’s murder by a gang of drunkards, who demanded money from him while he was on a morning walk on June 13.

CP Kumar visited the spot where the senior citizen was attacked and also inspected the entire stretch by foot.

Samir Roy Chowdhary (77) was killed in the attack at Parihar Chowk in Aundh in the wee hours of June 13. The gang also attacked a couple of other persons. The incident triggered an outrage against the police department. Citizens held a candle march in memory of Roy Chowdhary and paid tributes to him. They questioned inaction by the police and demanded an assurance of security.

The citizens held placards condemning the police. They alleged that such incidents have been happening in the area in the small hours and the police have been ignoring them.

The outrage compelled the CP to visit the area. While interacting with local residents, Kumar said, “We will do our best to bring the accused to justice. We will take steps to declare the minors involved in the case as adults and put them on trial. We will use legal provisions so that the accused would not get bail or their parents would face legal action. We will try to run the trial in a fast-track court through a special public prosecutor and get the accused punished. We will investigate the case thoroughly so that the family members of the Late Samir Roy Chowdhary will get justice. We will ensure that such incidents will not repeat in Aundh.”

Meanwhile, it is found during the investigation that four of the accused in the Roy Chowdhary murder case are minors. Two of them were involved in a murder case earlier. They were out on bail. The accused drank the entire night and wanted money to buy more alcohol. They were searching for a target and came across Samir Roy Chowdhary. They demanded money from him. He told them that he did not have it. Therefore, the accused killed him. Citizens in the area were frightened and met the CP, who assured all possible help.
