PMC estimates Rs 9000 Cr to develop newly merged areas
With the merger of 23 new villages in the existing city limits, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has officially become the city with the largest geographical area in Maharashtra.(PMC)
The development has increased PMC’s geographical area to 516.18 sq km which is more than Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) 440 sq km.
As per the order, 23 adjoining villages merged in PMC limits are Narhe, Holkarwadi, Autade-Handewadi, Wadachiwadi, Shewalewadi, Nandoshi, Sanasnagar, Mangdewadi, Bhilarewadi, Mhalunge, Sus, Bavdhan Budruk, Kirkatwadi, Pisoli, Kondhwe-Dhawade, Kopre, Nanded, Khadakwasla, Manjari Budhruk, Gujar Nimbalkarwadi, Jambhulwadi, Kolewadi and Wagholi.
In 2014, the state government had declared to include 34 villages in PMC however only 11 villages were merged and now these 23 village have been merged.
According to officials, the added villages will need basic development like water pipelines, sewage water network, solid waste management, road construction, and many more things which will strain the PMC’s existing capacity. The PMC officials estimate Rs 9000 Cr to develop basic facilities in these extended areas.
With the high estimated cost, the PMC is eyeing the state to provide necessary funds for the development of new areas.
Water demand to increase by 4-5 TMC
Presently Pune needs around 14 TMC water however with the development the city will need more water. Considering the construction and to meet the demand of the increasing population the city is expected to require around 19 TMC water says, experts.
PMC will get more property tax from next year
With the merger of these 23 villages,
PMC is expecting to increase the collection of property tax by almost Rs 100 crore.
As the decision of the merger was taken in June and the villagers might have paid property tax to Grampanchayat,
it will be next year when the PMC will get additional tax.
Straining resources
With an increase in a border, PMC will have to provide basic facilities to these villages and this increased demand will strain the resources.
