Pimpri PCMC News | Revitalizing Drainage Infrastructure: Pimpri-Chinchwad’s Comprehensive Survey and Upgrade Project

Pimpri : Pimpri PCMC News | In response to the increasing instances of clogging due to aging drainage lines, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has launched a comprehensive survey of the city’s drainage channels and natural drains. With an allocated budget of three hundred crore rupees, the aim is to update and enhance the existing drainage infrastructure. The survey will serve as the basis for a separate plan to address the issues in the channels and drains.
The city of Pimpri-Chinchwad boasts an extensive network of 1600 kilometers of drainage channels and 53 major natural drains. However, the infrastructure dates back 35 years, and while some new channels have been constructed in certain areas, the aging systems are increasingly prone to blockages. The growing population has led to a significant increase in sewage generation, exacerbating the challenges faced by the outdated drainage infrastructure.

To tackle this issue, the Municipal Corporation has appointed a private organization to conduct a comprehensive survey of all drainage channels and drains in the city, taking inspiration from the successful model implemented in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The survey, which will be completed within a year, will be divided into four parts to ensure efficiency. The organization conducting the survey will receive a fee of one and a half percent of the total project cost.

The survey aims to identify and assess the condition of the old and damaged drainage channels, determine areas prone to water accumulation and blockages, and identify locations requiring increased channel capacity. The surveying organization will submit a detailed plan of action to the Municipal Corporation based on their findings, guiding the municipality’s efforts to upgrade the drainage channels and drains accordingly.

The initiative aligns with the directives of the Ministry of Jal Shakti of the Central Government, which emphasizes the importance of conducting such surveys and updating drainage systems. The anticipated budget of three hundred crore rupees for the project is expected to receive subsidies from the Central Government. By undertaking this work, the Municipal Corporation aims to mitigate water pollution and enhance the city’s drainage infrastructure to better serve its growing population.
