Pavana Dam is overflowing,  2200 cusecs water discharged

Pune: Pavana Dam, which supplies water to Pimpri-Chinchwad city has been filled. The 2,200 cusecs of water has been discharged from 10 am onwards. The villages along the Pavana river have been alerted by the administration. The Pavana Dam watershed area has received 82 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Water is supplied to the villages of Pimpri-Chinchwad and Maval talukas from Pavana dam. For the first time this year, the dam has almost overflowed and 2,200 cusecs of water is being discharged into the river basin. Meanwhile, Pimpri-Chinchwad  has been getting water supply on alternate days since last year. So, even after filling the dam to full capacity, will corporations withdraw the decision to cut water?

Although the Pavana Dam surrounding area has received satisfactory rainfall for over a month, it is considered to be less than last year. From June 1 to August 30 this year, 1,543 mm of rainfall has been recorded whereas  last year, 3,154 mm of rainfall was recorded. These figures show that this year’s rainfall in the Maval area is very low. In the last 24 hours, the dam’s water reserves have increased by 3.56 per cent. Since June 1, the dam’s water level has risen by 62.71 per cent.
