Maratha Kranti Morcha turns into a Violent Protest

For the last few days, the Maratha Protesters have come out on the streets demanding Maratha reservation. This movement has took a violent turn in Pune.

Protesters racked the properties in collector’s office. Protesters had demanded Pune collector Naval Kishore Ram to accept their demands but he denied to accept it on immediate basis.

Pune Collector Naval Kishore Ram said, “some of the protestors trespassed the collector office premises and started to spread violence. Markets are closed but there have been noticed the peaceful environment.”

Pune Commissioner K Venkatesham said, “the crowd gathered at Chandni chowk is under control. Tear gas was used as the crowd was being a trouble to control at Pune collector office. There are possibilities that few outsiders were included in the crowd. Action will be taken against violators.”

In the Chandni Chowk, protestors pelted stones at the police. Police had to do laathi-charge to disperse the crowd. It is the primary news that some fifteen staffers were injured in this violation.

During the agitation, the protestors blocked all the roads in the Chandni Chowk. Pune-Bangalore Highway was also stopped by the traffic on this route. Meanwhile, the act of stone pelting created stressful environment. To disperse the crowd, police used laathi-charged  to mobilize the crowd.

The protesters blocked the Pune-Nagar road. Agitators targeted Hyatt hotel on Nagar Road. They broke into the hotel and demolished the properties of hotel. A program was going on in hotel which was asked to stop by agitators. Hyatt is believed to be one of the prestigious hotels in the city.

Protestors have blocked the Mumbai Pune highway near Urse toll gate. Protesters stopped buses and other vehicles on roads in Latur, Jalna, Solapur and Buldhana districts.

Over 7,000 police personnel have been deployed in the city, along with some companies of the State Reserve Police Force and Rapid Action Force, to maintain law and order, Pune Commissioner of Police Venkatesham K said.

The bandh is being organised despite Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s assurance that his government was working on providing reservation to Marathas in government jobs and educational institutions, one that is legally sustainable.

Different Maratha groups demanding 16 per cent reservation have called for a shutdown in Maharashtra today (August 9). Marathas, a politically influential community that constitutes around 30 per cent of the state’s population, have been demanding 16 per cent reservation in jobs and educational institutions.

Sakal Maratha Samaj of Maratha groups, called for a ‘bandh’ across Maharashtra, except Navi Mumbai.
