Domestic Violence | A Disturbing Trend in Pune: Rising Incidents of Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence | Pune, known as the motherland of education and the cultural capital of the state, is facing a disheartening reality. Over the past two years, incidents of harassment and beatings by husbands or in-laws have witnessed a concerning increase. The women in distress have sought refuge in the ‘Bharosa Cell’ of the police.

A Rising Concern: The ‘Gender Social Norms Index 2023,’ recently presented by the ‘UN Development Programme,’ reveals a deeply disturbing aspect of society. Among data collected from 80 countries, including India, during the period 2010 to 2022, an alarming 25 percent of respondents believe that it is acceptable for a husband to physically abuse his wife. In Pune, these statistics come to life as the city recorded 4,250 cases of husband-inflicted violence within a span of two years.

Seeking Support:
In response to the distressing situation, women who have suffered at the hands of their husbands or in-laws have sought help from the ‘Bharosa Cell’ of the Pune Police. Notably, a significant number of complainants come from the middle-class and upper-middle-class strata of society. The Women’s Help Desk within the ‘Bharosa Cell’ received 2,839 complaints in the year 2022 alone, with an additional 1,520 complaints registered in the current year. Out of a total of 4,359 complaints, the dedicated team of the Bharosa Cell successfully resolved 3,662 cases through mediation and counseling. For the remaining complaints, legal action has been initiated, with cases being registered at local police stations.

Unveiling the Root Causes:
Investigating the underlying reasons behind such incidents, it becomes evident that extramarital affairs play a central role. Women are subjected to beatings and torture based on suspicions of their involvement in immoral relationships. Shockingly, even minor reasons have triggered violent episodes, highlighting the fragile state of the marital relationships in question.

The Role of Bharosa Cell:
Led by dedicated officers like Sub-Inspector Tejashwi Pawar, the Bharosa Cell acts as a beacon of hope for victims of domestic violence. Through compassionate intervention and effective mediation, the Cell aims to break the cycle of abuse and prevent future incidents. By bridging the gap between complainants, their husbands, and in-laws, the Bharosa Cell strives to foster understanding and provide a safer environment for women within their own homes.
