The protesters claimed that the Tribal Development Department has miss led the Dhangar Community. The office has given wrong information to the community. The protesters claimed that by doing this they are teaching a lesson to the department.

The Tribal Development Department is near the Babasaheb Ambedkar Research and Training Institute in Pune.

A week earlier, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “The government is committed and taking every effort to complete all procedures (for reservations for the community) at the earliest. We are completing constitutional formalities with a detailed report by the TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) which is expected to get done by the end of this month.”

Dhangars currently enjoy reservation under the nomadic tribe (NT) category, which is entitled to 3.5 percent quota. However, community members are now demanding that their caste is included in the ST category, which enjoys a 7 percent quota.

Moreover, since the NT category is not recognized at the center, community members feel that they have been deprived of jobs with the Union government. At the center, the ST list includes the ‘Dhangad’ community, while the Dhangars are excluded.

In a press conference held at Pune by Dhangar Community, in the month of July, Gopichand Padalkar, said, “Through RTI, we have got information that no district administration in the state has issued any certificate for the Dhangad community. However, former CM Prithviraj Chavan and tribal minister Vishnu Devara have said Dhangar and Dhangad are different communities having different cultures. For this wrong information, we are going to file criminal cases against both of them.”
