Mumbai: A young doctor in Mumbai was relishing a cup of ice cream when he saw a cut human finger in it. The bizarre incident sent chills down citizens’ spines. It has now been revealed that the Yummo brand ice cream was produced in Pune.

The doctor rushed to the Malad Police Station with the cup and lodged a complaint. A case was registered under sections 272 (adulteration of a product), 273 (sale of dangerous food and drink) and 336 (endangering lives of others) against the company officials.

The grotesque dessert was served in Mumbai on Thursday (June 13). The manufacturing address on the cup was: Laxmi Ice Cream Pvt Ltd, Gaziabad, UP, which is located in Tronica Industrial Area in Ghaziabad. Speaking to a news daily, company director Yadeshwar Pal said, “We manufacture ice cream for many companies, including Yummo, and supply it across the country. However, we have nothing to do with the incident in Mumbai.”

Pal said, “Our company wrapper is ubiquitous. Names of all manufacturing units are printed on it. Every plant has a batch code, which confirms the manufacturer. The Mumbai ice cream batch code is printed on the cup. It was produced at Fortune plant in Hadapsar in Pune. Our batch code begins with the letter ‘D’. Fortune and Laxmi are third party manufacturers.”

Yummo has issued a statement in this regard. It said, “We have purchased the ice cream from a third party. Their production has been halted. Moreover, batches distributed in the market have been called back. We are probing the case and will cooperate with the government agency concerned.”
