4 held for cheating elderly of gold

NPnews24 Online Pune: The officials from Crime Branch Unit 1 of Pune city police have arrested four persons and detected seven cases of cheating elderly persons of making replica of their gold ornaments. The cops have recovered ornaments worth Rs 6.5 lakh.

DCP (Crime) Bachchan Singh said, “Four accused persons from Baramati have been arrested. They used to gain access to the house under pretext of selling milk products and later on ask for jewellery worn by senior citizens for making their replicas and used to abscond with jewellery.”

While investigating these cases, policemen Yogesh Jagtap, Mallikarjun Swami and Sudhakar Mane had received tip-off about suspects presence in Baramati. Accordingly, a team was sent there and the accused person were arrested.

The arrested persons have been identified as Ashok alias Kantya Vishwanath Gangavane (27), Navnath Vishnu Waikar (25), Lankesh Popat Waikar (22) and Sunil Somnath Waikar (30).

According to police, these persons used to approach elderly women pretending to be sellers of ghee.

“While talking to women, they used to win their confidence. They would make excuse that their brother is getting married, their mother who is standing downstairs would like to make a gold chain/jewellery like the one worn by the victim woman. They would take the ornament under pretext of showing to their mother and then decamp from there,” PSI Dinesh Patil said.

Besides the ornaments worth Rs 6.54 lakh, the cops have also seized four bikes worth Rs 3.86 lakh from the accused persons.

The investigation team included Senior Police Inspector Arun Waikar, PSI Uttam Budgude and Hanumant Shinde and policemen Prakash Lokhande, Anil Ghadge, Ajay Thorat, Prashant Gaikwad, Amol Pawar, Subhash Pingale, Baba Chavan, Tushar Malwadkar, Rizwan Jinedi, Sanjay Barkade, Shrikant Waghawle, Umesh Kate, Irfan Momin, Imran Shaikh, Tushar Khadke, Sachin Jadhav, Ashok Mane, Vijesing Wasave and Kailash Giri.
