Pune\u2019s population is around 60 lakhs. The city\u2019s population is likely to reach 1 crore by 2047 at the current birth rate and the speed of migration. The PMC is implementing the 24X7 equitable water supply scheme. However, around 10 pc residential areas in the city have already started facing water shortages. The city is likely to face a water crisis in the future considering the growing population, if new options of water supply are not discovered. This has been revealed in the PMC\u2019s Environment Status Report (ESR) 2021-22, which was presented before the General Assembly on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report throws light on the land in use, population, roads and vehicle population, solid waste and sewerage management, health, education, water supply, gardens, weather, current environment status, various civic schemes and future schemes. Statistics given in the ESR indicate the cityscape in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The area of the city has grown to 519 sq km following the merger of 23 villages into the PMC limits. The draft Development Plan (DP) for these villages is being readied and the Integrated Development Regulations have been implemented there. Employment is being generated in Pune due to the presence of industry and educational institutions. Hence, people are migrating to the city to avail these job opportunities. This has given a big boost to the real estate sector. The geographical condition of the city is posing challenges to the water supply management. Around 10 pc population is facing water scarcity. Mega development is likely to take place in suburbs and the merged villages in the future. Supplying water to such a big population will be a huge challenge.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Road development has not kept pace with the expansion of the city and the future population. Meanwhile, the city\u2019s vehicle population has grown exponentially and reached 35 lakhs. The public transport system is being strengthened. More buses are inducted into the fleet of PMPML. Simultaneously, new metro railway routes are being built. The need for public transport has been highlighted for the future needs in the ESR.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights of the ESR<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>*263 bird species have been spotted in the city<\/p>\n<p>*Around 2,200 (950 wet waste) tonnes of solid waste is generated in the city. 100 percent waste is processed. Awareness is being spread about solid waste management and use of plastic<\/p>\n<p>*High air pollution was reported in Shivajinagar and Hadapsar in 2022<\/p>\n<p>*Under the 24X7 water supply project, 830 km of water pipelines have been laid out of the planned 1,550 km. Out of the 115 km transmission work 73 km has been completed. As many as 1,19,746 water meters have been installed<\/p>\n<p>*It has been made mandatory to use treated sewage water at the STPs for construction purpose<\/p>\n<p>*The electricity usage has grown from 4,463.59 mn units to 4,982.89 mn units in the city<\/p>\n<p>*A climate action plan has been readied to address issues such as carbon emissions, greenhouse gases and climate change.
