Pune’s BJP MP Girish Bapat passes away; Funeral to be held at Vaikunth crematorium at 7 pm on Wednesday

Pune : NpNews24 Online  –  Pune BJP MP Girish Bapat Passes Away | Senior BJP leader and city MP Girish Bapat passed away at a city hospital on Wednesday. He was 72. He is survived by wife, son and daughter-in-law. His death was announced by BJP’s city unit chief Jagdish Mulik. He was ailing for a long time and after his health deteriorated, he was admitted to Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital on Wednesday. His mortal remains will be kept at his residence in Shaniwar Peth from 2 pm to 6 pm to allow people to pay their respects. His funeral will be held at 7 pm at the Vaikunth crematorium. During his four decade career, he shouldered various responsibilities such as RSS Swayamsevak, labour leader, corporator, MLA and MP. Bapat was an influential figure in local politics. He had taken part in campaigning for the recently held Kasba Peth bypoll by sitting on a wheelchair.

Bapat was an RSS Swayamsevak. He was a member of Jan Sangh and he got involved in politics. Bapat, who started his career as a corporator, was consecutively elected as MLA for five times. In the 2019 Lok Sabha poll, he had defeated Mohan Joshi of Congress and entered the Lok Sabha.

 

Bapat was born on September 3, 1950 in Pune. After completing his early education in Talegaon Dabhade, he completed his secondary education from New English School, Ramanbaug. After taking BCom degree from BMCC, he joined Telco as a worker. Later, he was imprisoned for 19 months in the Nashik jail during emergency.

 

However, his political career started after he was released from the jail. He successfully shouldered the responsibilities in RSS, Jan Sangh and other organisations. He became a corporator of the Pune Municipal Corporation for the first time in 1983. He was a corporator for three consecutive terms. He was elected as the chairman of the standing committee on the strength of his excellent ties with leaders of all parties, despite BJP not being in power.

 

He contested the assembly elections in 1995 and till 2014, he was elected for five times consecutively. In 1996, the BJP had given him the ticket for LS poll but he lost and Suresh Kalmadi of Congress became the MP. In 2014, Bapat wanted to contest the LS poll but the party gave the ticket to Anil Shirole. He managed to bag the ticket for 2019 LS poll and defeated Mohan Joshi of Congress by 96,000 votes.

 

Bapat was known for his all-inclusive politics in Pune’s political circles. Even if the opposition party is ruling, Bapat had the tact of getting his work done. His strong public outreach is considered his strong point. His political journey was smooth as he always got along with leaders of all parties.
