Pune: Water cuts likely after palkhi processions

Pune: The storage in the Khadakwasla chain of dams is dipping rapidly due to a long lull in the monsoon activity.

The total storage in the Khadakwasla system is 3.58 TMC. The city needs 0.05 TMC or 1,470 MLD water daily. Thus, 1.50 TMC water is used monthly. More water is required during the Palkhi processions. Therefore, water cuts are imminent.

The Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram Palkhi processions will pass through the city and the district at the end of the month. Half TMC water is released into the canal during this period. A decision is likely to be taken after the palkhi processions start, said Nandkishor Jagtap, Head, Water Supply Department, PMC.

Meanwhile, the State Water Resources Department has written a letter to the civic body asking it to use water from the reservoirs judiciously.

Last four days of this month are left. However, there has not been good rainfall in the catchment areas of the Khadakwasla chain of reservoirs. Meanwhile, the civic body has taken steps to plug water leakages at the Parvati, Warje and Lashkar Water Supply Centres. However, some city parts are getting inequitable, inadequate water supply and also with low pressure.
