Concerned by the growing number of serious injuries and deaths occurring due to road accidents, Pune Traffic Police has identified 36 Black Spots. A black spot is a place where more than five accidents have happened in the recent past.

Each of the 36 black spots was identified on the basis of the occurrence of 5 or more than 5 fatal and serious road accidents in the last few years. Pune traffic branch has appealed people to drive carefully while passing through these black spots.

Police have named black spots at Karishma chowk (Karve road), Walhekarchowk (Sahkarnagar), Katraj chowk, Dari Pul, Jedhe Chowk (Swargate), Dias Plot, Gangadham chowk, Fursungi railway bridge, Gadital (Hadapsar), Ramtekdi chowk, Undri chowk, Khadi machine chowk (Kondhwa), Telachi Mori (Nagar road),Kharadi Bypass, Hyatt Hotel, Sadal Baba (Yerwada), Sangamwadi bus parking, Mutha river bridge (Warje), Mai Mangeshkar Hospital (Warje), Dukkar Khind (Kothrud), Vadgaon Bridge, Navle Bridge (Sinhgad road), Aundh hospital, Vishalnagar, Jagtap Dairy chowk, Balewadi stadium, Wakad bridge, Bavdhan bridge, Punawale bridge, Bhumkar chowk, Dhawdevasti (Bhosari), Nashik phata (NH4), CME Bopodi, Bhakti Shakti chowk (Nigi), Dighi Magazine chowk, MIT Alandi.

The list of black spots has been receiving several comments from people on social media.

Pratyush Usgaonkar wrote, “Most of the cops are only interested in the collection of fines rather than controlling the traffic… I’m talking as I have seen this on a real-time basis as I stay very much near till the main signal in the city it’s absurd and ridiculous of the cops targeting ones who have not broken any offenses as well I do understand that majority of them are now following traffic rules, however, question still remains unanswered as to why general public are been harassed and asked to pay heavy fines.”

Omkar Lale added, “At the Black spot “Kothrud Karishma chowk”. Pedestrian crossing signals are also black.
Not a single pedestrian signal is working. Police allow the traffic to move at the time when pedestrian crossing is supposed to be green and there are pedestrians crossing the road. You only say “Pedestrian is the king of the road” but with no signal working the king is the beggar who asks vehicles to stop so that he can cross.”

Aniruddha Sahasrabudhe said, “Pune citizens will always appreciate good work done by Pune traffic police. Keep it up. Also, involve local residents in identifying and neutralizing “Accident Prone” spots on a road as they will provide very valuable feedback and suggestions to police that will prevent chances of an accident.”

Ujwala Gawade informed, “Wrong side driving has become routine at Gangadham chowk. Not only two-wheelers but four wheelers and school buses drive in the wrong way. It causes traffic congestion at this chowk. Strict action is needed against such reckless drivers otherwise the number of fatalities will definitely increase.”

Keshav V Kamath suggested that police must identify black spots by prediction and survey also and not after occurrences and fatal accidents.
