Pune Startups: 5600 from city registered with central government’s Startup India initiative

Pune: The Incubation and Start-ups committee of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) said on Friday (December 18) that Pune has more than 5600 start-ups registered with the Start-up India initiative of the central government. Maharashtra has about 20 thousand (18 per cent) start-ups registered of the total 1.10 lakh startups in the country, the committee survey has revealed.

Vishwas Mahajan, Head of the Committee shared these statistics here on Friday during a virtual meeting of the start-up ecosystem stakeholders in the city. MCCIA has launched a monthly interaction series for stakeholders in the start-up ecosystem in the city. The committee will be the voice of the start-up customers, Mahajan said during the interaction.

Mahajan said, “We had recently undertaken a study in which it was revealed that more than 5600 startups recognised by the government of India under the Startup India initiative are from Pune. There will be more startups who are functioning and operating from Pune but not registered with the government. We are trying to bring together all these startups along with the other stakeholders in the start-up ecosystem like accelerators and incubators.”

“There are few examples of unicorns and other startups who have made it to international headlines. However, we as a city are punching much below our potential,” Mahajan said.
