Pune: Sewage Crisis Hits Cantonment-MG Road: People Accused PMC of Inaction

Pune: In the area around Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue and near Hotel Grand on Cantonment-MG Road, a major sewage issue has emerged, causing significant distress for local residents and business owners. The main drainage line here has burst, leading to sewage spilling onto the road. This has resulted in a pervasive foul smell and an increase in mosquitoes in the area, exacerbating public frustration.
Bhojraj Belani, owner of Hotel Grand, has publicly criticised the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for its lack of action despite multiple complaints in this regard. He said that he had sent numerous notices to the PMC over the past 15 to 20 days informing them about the issue. However, the PMC did not answer any of his complaints.
Belani reported that the problem with sewage leakage is a persistent issue that has worsened in recent weeks. “Despite our repeated complaints and numerous emails to the PMC, there has been no substantial response or action taken to address the problem,” Belani stated.
He described the situation as detrimental to public health, highlighting that the pervasive odour has made it necessary for him to continuously wear a mask while working at his hotel.
Belani informed that earlier, a jetting machine was brought into the area by giving 1000 rupees to the PMC. However, it also did not solve the issue, as the PMC officials said that the machine could not navigate the blocked pipes.
This has caused a great resentment among people. They accused PMC of not being serious about their issue and only doing patchwork, leaving the original issue untouched.
