Pune: Police protection of 85 people withdrawn due to the polls

Pune: Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar has directed to withdraw police protection provided to some political leaders, developers and social activists in the backdrop of the Lok Sabha election.

The police provide security to various political leaders, builders, social activists and prominent citizens. One needs to apply to the police commissionerate to get police protection. As many as 110 people in the city have been provided police protection. As many as 350 more police personnel are used from the police force for this purpose.

Out of the 110 people, police protection of 85 has been withdrawn. The decision comes in the wake of the election. The policemen withdrawn from personal protection will be used for the election duty, said CP Kumar.

He said that the police personnel on bandobast duty in sensitive areas will continue to be deployed there. Bandobast has been withdrawn from 25 places, where there was not much need of the police force. As many as 54 people had applied for personal protection to the police. These applications have been cancelled.

People possessing licensed arms have been asked to deposit them with the police. Security has been increased across the city. Suspect vehicles are being checked in nakabandi operations in the city, said the CP.
