Pune: Elgar Parishad to be held on January 30 in Swargate

Pune: The Elgar Parishad will be held on Saturday (January 30) at Shri Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch in Swargate. Retired Bombay High Court Judge B. G. Kholse Patil had applied to the Swargate police for permission to the Elgar Council and sought permission from them.

The conference is scheduled to be held on January 30 in Pune. Keeping the Covid-19 pandemic in mind, only 200 people will be allowed to attend the conference, said Balasaheb Kopnar, Senior Police Inspector, Swargate police station.

Police had denied permission to hold the Elgar Parishad which was scheduled on December 31 2020 on the grounds of law-and-order situation and citing the spread of coronavirus. Earlier, violence had broken out in Bhima Koregaon, where lakhs of Dalits had converged to commemorate the battle of Bhima Koregaon, after a day the Elgar Parishad was held on December 31 in 2017. In the months following the event, a number of activists present at the event were arrested under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
