Pune division records 464 deaths on railway tracks in 2022

Last year, 464 deaths took place on railway tracks in Pune division last year and there has been an increase of 24 per cent in the number of such deaths, according to observations made by the railway police. It is illegal to cross railway tracks. There is a provision of punishment under the Railways Act. Six districts are included in the Pune division. Important stations like Pune, Daund, Miraj, Solapur, Kolhapur and Ahmednagar are in the jurisdiction of the railway police. Accidents happen when people try to cross tracks in a dangerous manner. Citizens are knocked down by speeding trains. The incidents of suicide caused by financial problems and love affairs are more than those caused by other reasons. The railway police keep a track of such incidents and record them as accidental deaths.

 

From January to December 2022, the railway police’s Pune division has recorded 464 deaths. The information was given by SP Shrikant Dhivare of railway police’s Pune division. The railway police’s jurisdiction is spread over a large area. The task of maintaining the safety of the railway tracks is with the railway police and the RPF. He said that it is not possible to appoint personnel at all spots.

 

The number of accidents happening on the Pune-Lonavla route and the tracks passing through city areas is more. Many people try to take a short cut by crossing the railway tracks. Dhivare said that more deaths are reported when people try to cross railway tracks. The incidents of suicides are caused by family disputes, love affairs and financial problems.
