Cyber thieves fleece eye specialist of Rs 2 lakh; dupe her under the guise of service charges on credit card

Pune : NpNews24 Online  – Pune Cyber Crime | Banks and the police always tell citizens not to disclose their PIN number and OTP to anyone as a public awareness campaign. Despite this, it is seen that cyber awareness is less among the highly educated class. An incident has come to light wherein a woman was fleeced of Rs 1 lakh 97 thousand and 827 by telling her that she will have to pay for insurance and other service charges for the credit card. A 37-year-old woman staying in Hadapsar has lodged a complaint at the Wanawadi police station. The incident took place on April 7, 2022.

 

According to the police, the woman is an eye specialist in a hospital. She received a call on her mobile on April 7. She was asked whether she was aware that insurance and service charges will have to be paid by her on the credit card. She told the caller that she wanted to discontinue using her credit card. The caller tod her that she will get a call from the number displayed on the back of the credit card and she can tell them to cancel the credit card. After a while, she got a call from a number starting with 1800. The caller asked her about basic information. He told her to reveal the three digit number on the back of the credit card. The caller kept on talking with her.

 

He asked whether the address was correct and asked whether the bank had verified it. He told her that a bank employee will come to her residence. He told her to reveal the OTP which she had received and she informed him about the OTP. After a few minutes, cyber thieves withdrew Rs 1 lakh 97 thousand and 827 from her account and emptied it.

 

She immediately lodged a complaint with the cyber police. The cyber police acted promptly and froze the funds deposited in another bank after having a correspondence with bank’s officials.
