Pune : NpNews24 Online – Pune Crime News | A terror plot in the city has been foiled. This was revealed in the investigation carried out by the State Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the city police. After targeting Mumbai and Thane, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) has set its sights on Pune, which has posed a big challenge to investigative agencies. (Pune Crime News)
The Kothrud Police had arrested terror suspects Mohammad Imran Khan and Mohammad Yakub Saki, both residents of Ratlam, MP, during nakabandi operations in the city in the wee hours of July 18. Their accomplice Shahnawaz Alam escaped taking advantage of darkness. Houses of the terror suspects were searched, where bomb-making material and a drone was seized.
A laptop seized from their possession revealed that they were declared absconding by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). There was Rs 5 lakh award each on their head. They belonged to terror outfit Sufa. The investigation of the case was later handed over to the ATS.
The ATS investigation revealed that the terror suspects received training for making bombs in the jungles surrounding Satara and Saswad. As the investigation progressed, the NIA arrested Dr Adnan Ali Sarkar from Kondhwa, who was a part of an ISIS module. He used to recruit youths in ISIS.
Adnan Ali’s close aide Zulfikar Barodawala was already arrested by the NIA from Nagpada. He was lodged in the Mumbai Central Jail for interrogation. He had imparted bomb-making training to the two terror suspects. Bomb-making material was seized from their possession, which they had buried in a jungle near Pune. Data saved in the laptop and electronic devices revealed the ISIS connection of the two terror suspects.
They were staying in Kondhwa for one-and-a-half years. They had conducted recce of some sensitive areas in Pune using a two-wheeler and a drone.
The NIA had seized explosives from Rajasthan in 2022. The NIA had arrested Tabish Nasir Siddiqui from Mumbai, Zubair Noor Mohammad alias Abu Nusaiba from Kondhwa, Sharjil Shaikh from Thane, zulfikar Ali Barodawala and Dr Adnan Ali Sarkar last month in the Rajasthan case. On Saturday, the ISIS-related sixth suspect, Akif Atik Nachan, was arrested. He had trained others in bomb-making.
German Bakery to Kurulkar
Bomb explosions had happened in the city at German Bakery in Koregaon Park, at the parking lot of Faraskhana Police Station and the serial low-intensity blasts on Jangali Maharaj road using bicycles.
DRDO scientist Dr Pradeep Kurulkar was honey-trapped and classified documents were procured from him by the Pakistani intelligence agency. New details are being revealed by Kurulkar in the investigation by the ATS. The developments indicate that Pune is being targeted by terrorists. Investigation agencies have been alerted.
Coordination among probe agencies
The Pune Police, the ATS and the NIA have been successful in foiling the terror plot. Dr Adnan Ali was also under the ATS radar. A report on his activities was sent to the ATS recently.
Abdul Qadir Dastgir Pathan who sheltered the terror suspects, Simab Nasaruddin Qazi and others financing them could be arrested due to the coordination among the probe agencies.
