Man arrested for cheating 9 goldsmiths, goods worth Rs 8 lakh recovered

Pune : NpNews24 OnlinePune Crime | An incident has come to light wherein 9 goldsmiths were told that they have been paid by PhonePe after buying gold and were cheated. The Hadapsar police have arrested a person and seized goods worth Rs 8 lakh. The accused had purchased a gold ring from Ronak Jewellers and cheated the firm by impressing on them that he had paid by PhonePe. A case has been registered at Hadapsar police station.

 

The accused has been identified as Vishal Manik Ghodke (28), a resident of Holevasti, Hole building, Undri. Rameshwar Nandlal Verma, a resident of Amanora Township, Hadapsar had lodged a complaint at the Hadapsar police station. The incident had taken place on January 24, 2022. The accused had purchased a ring weighing 5 gm 480 mg and cheated the firm.

 

Policemen Prashant Dudhal and Suraj Kumbar got the information about the accused. The police detained him and questioned him. He admitted that he had cheated various jewellery merchants in Pune city and other areas in the last two months.

 

The accused used to visit jewellery shops and at the time of buying, he used to scan the QR code of the payment app in the shop and used to take a screenshot of the failed payment. He used to show the UTR Number to the shopkeeper and used to take away the ornaments after impressing on the shopkeeper that the money had been paid. Sometimes, some shopkeepers refused to hand over the ornaments because the payment did not go through.

 

The accused by using the edited screenshot and conducted transactions of more than Rs 14 lakh and tried to cheat more than 50 shopkeepers. The police think that more crimes committed by the accused may come to light.

 

The accused committed the crime in the jurisdictions of Hadapsar, Wanawadi, Chandan Nagar, Bharati Vidyapeeth and Jejuri police stations. The police have brought to light nine crimes committed by the accused and seized goods worth Rs 8 lakh. Apart from gold ornaments, there is a Celerio car. The accused has been sent to police custody for six days.
