PMC to recruit transgenders as contract employees
Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a progressive decision to help the socially neglected transgender community to stand on their own feet and to bring them into mainstream society. As many as 25 transgenders will be immediately appointed as security guards at the PMC’s properties.
They will be recruited through labour contractors on an experimental basis. The remaining transgenders will be recruited in a phased manner. A proposal to this effect has been approved by administrator and municipal commissioner Vikram Kumar and additional municipal commissioner (estate) Kunal Khemnar.
These security guards will be posted at the PMC’s Kamala Nehru Hospital, Rajiv Gandhi Zoo, Municipal Bhavan and illegal construction removal and anti-encroachment department. The already existing contractors Sainik Security Pvt Ltd and Eagle Security Pvt Ltd will pay their salaries and government grants.
The proposal was prepared and presented by deputy municipal commissioner (security department) Madhav Jagtap. An NGO working for the transgender community will coordinate for smooth social relations between the transgender employees and the PMC employees and officers. An awareness programme will be conducted for the purpose.
It has been resolved to bring the community into the mainstream and make them a part of people-oriented initiatives. The civic administration said that the initiative is important for doing justice to every element of society.
