Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College may be run on PPP basis

Pune : NpNews24 OnlinePMC Medical College Pune | The admission fees for the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Hospital, Pune has been fixed at Rs 7 lakh. However, there is a huge difference between the revenue earned through fees and the money needed to run the college and hospital. Therefore, it has been decided to run the college and hospital on the public private partnership (PPP) basis. The decision was made in a meeting of the Medical College Trust meeting, said Additional Municipal Commissioner Ravindra Binwade.

The PMC has procured all permissions required to run the college and hospital. In all, 100 students will be admitted to the college in the coming academic year. The trustees discussed the admission fees, expenditures to run the college and hospital, etc on Monday in a meeting chaired by Mayor Murlidhar Mohol.

Giving details about the decisions made in the meeting, Binwade said the Rs 7-lakh fees has been decided as per the government decision. Around Rs 7 crore will be collected through fees in the first year.

Around 100 students will be added every year for the next five years. Thus, there will be 500 students after five years and the total fee collection will be Rs 35 crore. However, annual administrative expenses to run the college would be Rs 60 crore. Moreover, the construction cost of the college is estimated to be Rs 650 crore. Hence, the civic body will have to earmark around Rs 200 crore every year for some years. The PMC is already implementing big projects in the merged villages, for which it would need crores of rupees. This was also discussed in the meeting.

After discussing all this, the municipal commissioner proposed to run the college on the PPP basis. Most of the trustees responded positively to this. However, whether a college run by a trust can be run on the PPP basis will be known after gathering relevant information, said Binwade.
