PMC Agreement With MahaPreit | PMC signs agreement with MahaPreit for saving electricity; No action taken even after 18 months; PMC helpless due to government pressure

Pune : NpNews24 Online  –  PMC Agreement With MahaPreit | One and a half years have passed since the PMC signed a contract with MahaPreit, a government company, for saving electricity. However, the company has not done any work so far. Since the PMC is showing documents of measures taken to save electricity, a huge amount of money continues to be spent on paying electricity bills. Now, even officers are saying that the civic administration is not cancelling the agreement with MahaPreit and finding a new solution due to government pressure.

The use of electricity and expenditure is increasing while supplying water, at STPs, all buildings of the civic body, schools, hospitals, gardens, auditoriums, grounds and streetlights. As a solution, earlier bulbs have been removed and power saving LED bulbs have been installed. Despite this, since MSEDCL’s rates are higher, efforts are being made to purchase power from private companies at lower rates since four years. The PMC signed an agreement with ESSL for purchasing solar power. However, sine this organisation expressed its inability to supply power, the civic body signed an agreement with MahaPreit. However, the company has not started work even after 18 months.

After the agreement was signed, the Chief of Electricity Department of PMC Srinivas Kandul had ordered MahaPreit to carry out an audit of use of electricity in all departments in January 2022. Some officials were also given the task of coordinating with MahaPreit. The purpose of the order is preparation of a plan regarding the use of electricity, available machines, repairs and maintenance, upgradation.

As per Kandul’s order, concerned officials have done a follow-up with MahaPreit from January 2022. Each official has sent reminders to MahaPreit but the company has not responded, an official said. MahaPreit officials have orally told civic officials that they don’t carry out audit of electricity usage.

As per the agreement with MahaPreit, there is a condition of forming a SPV. A correspondence has been carried out with the government for getting approval for setting up of SPV. However, the state government has not given its approval for setting up of SPV. Hence, for last 18 months, only a show is being made about saving electricity and the civic body is keeping mum. Although, new technology for saving power is available in the market, the PMC is helpless. The expenditure is ultimately being borne by citizens.

The civic administration has appointed MahaPreit as consultant for STPs. The company has carried out an audit of STPs and submitted a report. According to the report, three old STPs will have to be demolished and built again. The report has suggested repairs of six STPs for which will cost ₹800 crores. The report has been prepared by MahaPreit which is dilly dallying on carrying out an audit of functioning of STPs in terms of saving of electricity and suggesting upgradation of machines. It is surprising that the PMC is keeping mum about this.
