ORAL HEALTH AWARENESS CAMP FOR EX-SERVICEMEN

The Department of Dental Surgery& Oral Health Sciences, Armed Forces Medical College, Pune organized the second phase of Oral Cancer screening an Oral Health Awareness Camp for the ex-servicemen and their dependents, to spread the message and importance of Oral Health Care across Maharashtra.

Maharashtra has a large population of Oral cancer and tobacco-related diseases across the state and has one of the largest burdens of Oral Cancer across India as per GOI statistics. More than 01 lakh death occurs across India due to Oral Cancer.

The dept conducted phase-I of Oral Cancer Screening and Oral Health Awareness Camps for the ex-servicemen and their dependents from 04 Dec 2017 to 09 Dec 2017 at six different ECHS polyclinic locations in central Maharashtra. The camps were a success amongst the veterans wherein more than 1500 patients were screened and above 200 patients were treated for various dental diseases including timely detection of oral cancer and intervention provided.

This second phase of the camp is being conducted across various places in Maharashtra covering areas like Alibaug, Chiplun, Oros-Sawantwadi(Sindhudurg) and Kolhapur districts of Maharashtra from 17 Sep 2018 to 22 Sep 2018.

The Oral Cancer Screening and Oral Health Awareness Camp on Wheels is being conducted by a team of Dental & Oral Health specialists of various specialties of Dept of Dental Surgery, AFMC purely as a voluntary effort with no expenditure to state. The Oral health team comprises of 15 Officers and 03 para Dental personnel, led by Brig SK Roy Chowdhury, Prof & HOD Department of Dental Surgery & Oral Health Sciences, AFMC Pune. The Oral health care camp was flagged off from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune by Air Marshal CK Ranjan AVSM VSM Director & Commandant, AFMC who handed over the DGAFMS flag to the team leader, Brig Subodh Mulgund, SM  Offg Dean and Dy Commandant AFMC, handed over the AFMC flag and Brig HS Sandhu, Offg Commandant & Command Dental Advisor (SC) handed over the AD CORPS flag and wished the team a total success in their humanitarian effort. The camp is being conducted voluntarily as a motor cycle rally under the banner of DGAFMS covering a distance of approx. 1100 kms. The expenses of the same are being borne by the team members themselves. Mobile dental equipment is being utilized for an on-site screening and primary dental care with an aim to provide maximum oral health care benefit to the ESM populace.
