Notorious goon nabbed for demanding protection money from hotel manager

Sleuths from the Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of Pune police crime branch have arrested a notorious goon who threatened a hotel manager and demanded protection money (hafta) of Rs 50,000 per month.

The arrested accused has been identified as Charles Devraj James Thapa (27), a resident of BT Kawde road. Prakash Jayshankar Shukla, manager of Hotel Quality Inn Mint, near Ruby Hall Clinic, has lodged a complaint against him.

According to police, Thapa had called Shukla several times on phone claiming to be from one Hemant Pujari gang and demanded the extortion money and threatened to kill him by firing if the amount was not paid. Police traced his call and arrested him on Thursday.

He was earlier arrested in 2014 for demanding Rs one crore from hotel businessman.

Additional Commissioner of Police (crime) Pradip Deshpande, DCP (crime) Pankaj Dahane, ACP Samer Shaikh, supervised the investigation team which included Senior Police Inspector Raghunath Jadhav, PSI Raghunath Ghuge, and policemen Avinash Marathe, Bhausaheb Kondhre, Ramesh Garud, Uday Kalbhor, Mahesh Kadam, Mahesh Shinde, Santosh Mate, Firoj Bagwan, and Shivanand Bole.
