Municipal commissioner starts anti-encroachment drive in settlement of flood-hit people

PUNE: Despite being a Sunday, Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar forced the civic officials to work. When Kumar was passing through the Parvati Darshan area, he saw that illegal constructions had been built in the area. He immediately issued instructions regarding demolition of unauthorised structures. Local residents have alleged that the municipal commissioner forced the civic machinery to work on a holiday and started the action suddenly.

The settlement of flood-hit people has existed for many years. These houses have been given to the flood-affected people but the houses have not been transferred to them. The PMC has decided to give the settlement the status of a gaothan. However, many houses are in a dilapidated condition and it has become necessary to repair them. The members in the family have also increased and some residents have carried out repairs and additional constructions.

However, no rules have been framed for constructions in the area by the PMC and the collector’s office. The residents are alleging that the action was started on a holiday because of insistence of the municipal commissioner. The important question is for how long the residents should tolerate the civic action and when they will ger their own houses.
Former mayor and Congress leader Aba Bagul highlighted the local residents’ plight. “When the settlement was built, the families were small but now the members have increased. Since the houses are small, the extra constructions carried out by the working class should not be demolished and efforts should be made to find a solution,” Bagul said.
