Mumbai NGO appeals protection of churches during Christmas

MUMBAI: NP NEWS 24 ONLINE- A Mumbai based NGO appealed to Supreme court to ensure proper safety of Churches and all the Christians during the festival of Christmas. Also, it has appealed to take back its verdict which allowed bursting of firecrackers.

Christmas is hardly a few days away and people have started planning for parties and making preparations for the day. A huge number of people will be visiting the churches on this day right from Christians to non-Christians to offer prayers.

On a statement, Abraham Mathai, President of Harmony Foundation said that SC has lately allowed the bursting of firecrackers up till 12:30 am.

Mathai told a leading news source that, “Respecting the verdict of SC, bursting crackers during Christmas is neither our principle or a tradition. The most important thing is the safety of churches and all the Christians on 25 December.”

He said that in year 2017, 384 cases of attack on churches were reported across the nation out of which 15 took place on the eve of Christmas and this number is increasing day by day which is a matter of serious concern.”

Mathai has requested SC to order all the state governments to ensure proper security during this day to stop the evil elements of society who are willing to target the Christians and churches or who are trying to create hindrance to the religious rituals performed during this day.

Mathai said further that, “For a peaceful community it is not religiously necessary to burst crackers, but to let the holy rituals take place without any hindrance on this day and saving lives is a world fundamental right, which needs to be protected.”
