Maharashtra Police Constable ‘Lalit’ Became ‘Lalita’, Got Married to a Girl After Changing Sex

Mumbai: Police constable Lalit Salve of Maharashtra, who underwent sex-change surgery a year ago, got married to a woman on 16 February. Salve, whose journey from Lalita Salve to Lalit Salve was full of ups and downs and legal battles, performed the first phase of Sex Reassignment Surgery at the Government St. George’s Hospital in Mumbai in May 2018.

After the second and third phase operations in the following months, Salve (30), a resident of Rajegaon village in Majhalgaon tehsil of Beed district, finally acquired a new identity and name – Lalit. After the surgery, Salve started benefiting from a male constable in the Maharashtra police force. Salve married a woman in a small ceremony in Aurangabad city on Sunday.

Salve, posted as a constable in Majhalgaon, said, “I have been reborn after a three-stage sex-change surgery. I have started a new life after my marriage and will live happily now. My family members and relatives are happy for my marriage. ”

In the year 2014, he was shocked after the symptoms of transsexual gender emerged and due to Y status in his genes, he started getting attracted to women instead of men. After several tests, doctors advised him to undergo a gender change surgery in 2016 as a permanent remedy. After joining the police force, he approached the state police department to undergo sex-change surgery.

The department then turned down her petition because the eligibility criteria for men and women constables are different, including height and weight. The constable sought leave for a month to undergo sex reassignment surgery, but the request was refused by the Beed police officers, after which he approached the High Court. The High Court had directed Salve to approach the Maharashtra Administrative Tribunal as it was a service matter. Salve was later discharged by the Home Department to undergo sex-change surgery.
