Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute: Section 144 imposed in Kolhapur

Kolhapur : NpNews24 Online  – Kolhapur Article 144 | The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will stage a protest in Karnataka against Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai and Kannadigas’ increasing trouble in Maharashtra. Kolhapur Collectorate Office has imposed Section 144 to prevent any untoward incident. Gathering of four or more people has been prohibited in Kolhapur for the next few days from today.

The MVA has called a protest on December 10 over the Maharashtra-Karnataka border issue. The Kolhapur administration has taken this decision as there is a possibility that a large number of Marathi speaking people from the border areas will participate in this protest. At the same time, panchayat elections are also being held in Kolhapur district. The unlawful assembly has been imposed to avoid any law and order problem in case something untoward happens or the agitation takes a violent turn. Resident Deputy Collector Dattatray Kavitake has instructed that curfew order has been imposed in Kolhapur district from December 9 to 23.

On Saturday, December 10, there will be a strong protest by the Maha Vikas Aghadi against the Karnataka government. Leaders and workers of Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) have been invited for this movement.
Leaders of MVA and MES will jointly stage the protest at Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Mausoleum in Kolhapur. If, in the near future, the Maharashtra-Karnataka border issue will not be solved, MVA has warned to call for Maharashtra bandh.

The controversy started when Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai claimed 40 villages in Jat taluka of Sangli district. The problem intensified since incidents of vandalism and stone-pelting on Maharashtra vehicles happened in Belgaum on Karnataka Maharashtra border. The Maharashtra government is taking a lenient and conciliatory stance in this regard.
Therefore, the opposition parties have become aggressive.
